Creating a Climate for Health: Addressing Climate Change in Public Health

Host Public Health Institute

The California Endowment

1111 Broadway, 7th Floor

Oakland, CA

With funding from the Kresge Foundation, the Public Health Institute has been exploring the relationship between climate change and public health. At this convening, we will continue this exploration and review our findings to date, which have been informed by interviews and focus groups with 135 people, including many of you. We will discuss specific opportunities for incorporating climate change into public health practice and programs, and for expanding the presence of public health in community, local and state climate mitigation and adaptation work.

The convening will include a presentation of our initial thoughts about how to integrate climate change and public health; break-out groups on specific public health issue areas; exploration of how public health can more explicitly incorporate climate change into program development and program messaging; and the identification of emerging opportunities.

The convening is intended for those working in the field of public health—both within and outside of government agencies—and allies working on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The intent is to facilitate cross-fertilization among public health and climate change workers and to identify further opportunities for cross-linkages.
